Webinar upskills staff on elder abuse

Injury Matters will host a free webinar exploring how to recognise and respond to elder abuse for people working in the home and community care sector.

According to WA-based not-for-profit organisation Injury Matters, one in six older adults in WA is affected by elder abuse.

It can be difficult to recognise cases of elder abuse as it takes many forms, including financial, social, physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse and neglect.

Elder abuse can have ongoing health impacts, such as physical injury, poor mental health and an increased risk of premature entry into residential aged care.

It is important for health and community professionals to have the necessary skills to recognise the signs of elder abuse and neglect, and the tools to respond to it appropriately, said Injury Matters, who will be running the Recognising and Responding to Elder Abuse in Older Adults webinar on 18 March.

The free webinar is for anyone working with older adults, including home care provider staff, care, support and community workers, and health and allied health professionals.

Alongside guest facilitator Wendy Bennett from Advocare, Injury Matters’ webinar will explore:

  • elder abuse and its impacts
  • how to recognise and respond to elder abuse
  • options for clients experiencing elder abuse
  • the Elder Abuse Protocol and 5-step approach for action against elder abuse
  • department of Health and WA Country Health Services guidelines
  • elder abuse policy and procedure for established/planned organisations
  • Advocare and how they can assist

The webinar will not be recorded, and registration is necessary.
