RSL LifeCare champions veteran support

RSL LifeCare and RSL NSW have enhanced support for veterans through financial aid, housing assistance, and wellbeing programmes.

RSL LifeCare, in collaboration with RSL NSW, has made significant strides in providing vital support to veterans and their families. This initiative highlights the crucial role of tailored services that address the unique challenges faced by aging veterans.

Over the past two years, RSL LifeCare has effectively leveraged funding from various sources, totalling more than $21 million. These funds have been instrumental in facilitating a range of services designed to meet the holistic needs of veterans, reflecting a commitment that resonates deeply within the community.

In the last financial year, RSL LifeCare allocated more than $359,000 across 350 individual cases, marking a 26 per cent increase compared to the previous year. This financial assistance is essential for many elderly veterans struggling to access necessary care.

The organisation also provided housing support to more than 142 veterans facing instability, reinforcing the importance of safe and supportive living environments.

RSL LifeCare also assisted more than 770 veterans in filing nearly 3,400 DVA claims, highlighting the critical role of advocacy in navigating benefits.

A standout initiative is the Spur Ranch Equine Program, which focuses on recovery through engaging interactions with horses, offering a unique approach to wellbeing.

Additionally, RSL LifeCare provided more than 4,900 nights of accommodation for veterans experiencing homelessness.

Janet Muir, CEO of RSL LifeCare, remarked on the importance of continuing to enhance support services.

“Our veterans have made extraordinary sacrifices in service to our nation, and it is our duty to ensure they receive the care and support they need upon their return,” she said.

RSL NSW President Mick Bainbridge added: “The generosity of RSL NSW sub-Branches highlights the strength of our community. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of veterans and their families, ensuring they have access to critical services and support.”

The initiatives by RSL LifeCare provide a valuable framework for delivering specialised, community-oriented care. The insights gained from this model can inspire broader practices that enhance support for veterans in need.
