Reablement works, says expert

All aged care providers should be thinking about how they can embed exercise in their services, an industry event has heard.

If all aged care providers offered exercise pathways within their services, older adults would have better health and social outcomes and providers would have fewer staffing needs, according to an aged care executive.

Southern Cross Care (SA, NT & VIC) has embedded a reablement and wellness approach across its aged care services and the organisation’s group manager of research and development wants other providers to do similar.

Outlining the provider’s model and the outcomes a reablement approach can achieve at Australian Healthcare Week on Wednesday, Dr Tim Henwood said the evidence was clear.

“Exercise benefits all older people.” He said resistance training in particular provided older people with positive impacts to both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Speaking to Community Care Review on the sidelines of the event, Dr Henwood said reablement will likely be a requirement of services in the future and he encouraged providers to be actively thinking now about how they can embed it into all of their services.

In this video, Dr Henwood discusses why all aged care providers should offer exercise pathways in their services and how they can get started.
