The City of Greater Bendigo in central Victoria has released a document outlining its commitment to support the population to age well in the community.
Called the Positive Ageing Action Plan – and consisting of activities and initiatives – the document will help the council address the issues and challenges facing older people over the next two years.
“The PAAP responds to five key priority areas,” said City of Greater Bendigo mayor Andrea Metcalf. “Healthy and well, safe and secure, able to participate, connected to culture and community, and liveable.”
Given over a quarter of Greater Bendigo’s population is 60-plus, PAAP is an important piece of work for the council said Ms Metcalf.
“Our growing population of older adults will have a significant impact on the type and level of services and support required by older residents from all levels of government to ensure they enjoy healthy and active lives.”
Through the plan – and with the help of care navigators – council will be able to connect people with community services to assist them as they age.
The plan will also guide council on how it shares information and better communicates with older people, said Ms Metcalf.
Areas in the local government area forecast to have a high percentage of older adults by 2036 include:
- Elmore
- Heathcote
- Strathdale
- Big Hill
- Eaglehawk
- East Bendigo
- Kangaroo Flat.
“All which will have more than 30 per cent of their population aged over 60 years,” said Ms Metcalf.
She added: “This growth will impact on the diverse needs of older adults and will require a range of activities and programs to support them to age well.”
More than 100 Greater Bendigo residents provided feedback on the draft PAAP when it was released for community comment earlier this year, said Ms Metcalf.
“I would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide feedback … which was considered and incorporated into the final plan.”
