A webinar will held this month to help Australians who have experienced institionalised care overcome concerns about receiving community care.

An estimated half-a-million Forgotten Australians – also known as Care Leavers – are reaching an age when they may have to enter the aged care system.

The term Forgotten Australians refers to people who spent time in orphanages, and other forms of out-of-home care, prior to 1990.

While in out-of-home care, many of these people were physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by those entrusted with their safe-keeping.

For these individuals, entering the aged care system may present unique difficulties.

Hosted by the National Aged and Community Care Roundtable for Forgotten Australians, the webinar will highlight the barriers Forgotten Australians face when re-entering a care system.

As well, the webinar – Better Informed Aged and Community Care for Care Leavers – will aim to inform the aged and community care sectors of the history of Forgotten Australians so that their traumatic pasts can instruct the support and care that is delivered to them in their later years.

The speakers include:

  • Dr Frank Golding – a Care Leaver and vice-president of the Care Leavers of Australia Network
  • Professor Elizabeth Fernandez – professor of social work at the School of Social Sciences UNSW
  • Karyn Walsh – an Australian social justice advocate, and CEO and founder of the Micah Projects, a not-for-profit organisation committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged and marginalised populations.

The two-hour webinar – held on 26 April from 2.00pm until 4.00pm – will focus on trauma-informed practice, bringing more awareness to the life experiences of the individuals entering care, and how those life experiences create a need to feel safe while in care.
