The Department of Health launched a 30-minute online education course this week for care workers about protecting themselves and care recipients from infection with coronavirus.

Since its release on Monday, more than 13,000 people have enrolled, a spokesperson for the Department of Health said.

However, there have been technical issues including reports of the resource crashing.

“There is heavy demand on all internet resources as people seek information on the COVID-19 virus and how to protect themselves and the people they care for, which has impacted the course resources,” a spokesperson for the Department of Health told Australian Ageing Agenda.

“The resources works best in Google Chrome, as stated on the home page, and we are working to improve its performance on other browsers.”

Users are also advised not to repeat click the submit button because it makes the matter worse.

“We welcome the constructive input on potential improvements from people who have enrolled, and are working to deliver the best possible resource,” the spokesperson said.

The department is working on a solution with an aged care provider, who raised an issue  linked to their payroll system.

“This use of the course was not foreseen nor intended. Nonetheless the Department is seeking to help find a solution to meet the needs of the provider,” the spokesperson said.

As previously reported, the infection control education covers the fundamentals of infection prevention and control for COVID-19 including:

  • COVID-19 – what is it?
  • signs and symptoms
  • keeping safe – protecting yourself and others
  • myth busting.

The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes a quiz at the end.

On completion of the course, users can now download a PDF for printing so they can have a hard copy resource at hand.
