A new online resource has been launched to support aged care workers to deliver evidence-based palliative care to older Australians.

The resource, launched during Palliative Care Week, provides health professionals and support staff with the latest evidence and clinical tools to guide their practice, including evidence summaries, educational videos and practice resources.

palliAGED is funded by the federal government and managed by Flinders University through the CareSearch website.

palliAGED lead researcher Associate Professor Jennifer Tieman from Flinders University said the resource provides guidance to both the residential aged care and community care workforce to ensure staff deliver quality care at the end of life.

“Through programs like the Palliative Approach in Residential Aged Care and Palliative Approach for Aged Care in the Community Guidelines, Australia has led the world in providing evidence-based support for palliative care in aged care. We continue that international leadership with the launch of palliAGED,” she said.

palliAGED was launched by the Federal Minister for Aged Care Ken Wyatt at a function at Parliament House last week to mark Palliative Care Week.

“This new online resource collects under one umbrella a wide range of valuable research data and information,” said Mr Wyatt.

“It features new medications, medical practice, models of care, advice on cultural and other considerations, symptoms and treatment decisions, risk analysis, ways to support people and their families and public and consumer experience,” he said.

In addition to content for health workers, information and resources are also available for older people and their family and friends.

A national advisory group made up of key sector stakeholders guided the project’s development and the site’s content was informed by subject matter experts to deliver an authoritative resource for the sector.
