A new book has been published to help health professionals manage natural and man-made disasters.

Disaster Health Management: a primer for students and practitioners has been edited by Professor Gerry FitzGerald from QUT’s School of Public Health and covers events including Cyclone Yasi and Victoria’s bushfires.

“Disaster health management is an emerging but rapidly growing field focusing on health problems caused by disasters throughout the continuum of prevention, preparation, response and recovery,” Professor FitzGerald said.

The book features the work of 54 authors from around the world and provides an overview of the principles and practice underpinning disaster health management.

“Ultimately the text demonstrates how leadership can make a difference in building a community’s resilience before, during and after a disaster.” Professor FitzGerald said.

A key aim of the text is to give health professionals a common language to use to understand the principles and practices in the field in Australia and internationally.

Disaster Health Management: a primer for students and practitioners is published by Rutledge.
