A new audio installation to be featured in the Junction Arts Festival in Launceston next week explores the personal stories of retirement village residents.
VILLAGE is an art project by Melbourne-based artists Brienna Macnish, Clare McCracken and Robert D Jordan, created in collaboration with retirement village residents in Tasmania.
The project is a companion piece to HOME, which featured in the Melbourne experimental arts festival Next Wave in 2014 and explored older people’s reflections on ageing and the meaning of home.
VILLAGE reflects on the role that retirement village communities play in the lives of residents and in shaping public perceptions of ageing.
Ms Macnish said the audio-documentary aims to give Tasmania’s village residents a voice through the sharing of personal stories, while exploring themes such as downsizing and new beginnings in old age.
“At its heart, the project seeks to foster intergenerational empathy and connection,” she said.
“VILLAGE is a gesture towards how intergenerational connection within our communities might begin.”
