International MOOC to boost knowledge of dementia

Health and aged care workers and family carers are invited to participate in a free online course on person-centred approaches to dementia care run by the University of Derby.

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called Bridging the Dementia Divide will run over six weeks, commencing next month.

Course instructor David Robertshaw said the popular MOOC, launched last year, had attracted significant interest from families, carers and health professionals across the globe, including Australia.

Units covered in the self-paced online course include dementia as global health priority,  independence, control and quality of life, and end of life care.

This course is suitable for anybody who is interested in dementia and its effects on society, including health and aged care staff, policymakers and families of people with dementia.

It will enable learners to develop a better understanding of communication and compassion and how to help the person living with dementia to maintain independence, control and a good quality of life, said Mr Robertshaw.

The MOOC has been developed by the University’s Academic Innovation Hub and University of Derby Online Learning in conjunction with the University’s College of Health and Social Care.

The course will begin on March 7 and upon completion, participants will receive an e-certificate. For more information or to enrol visit the University of Derby’s website.
